Dorman OE Solutions Intake Manifold 615-175 Review

Visually, the quality of the Dorman intake's material and workmanship seems to be better than the Ford stock intake on my 2001 Mustang GT. The Dorman intake uses an aluminum crossover as opposed to the unreliable plastic crossover on the Ford stock intake (Ford corrected this problem in 2002). The Dorman intake also uses integrated O-rings instead of traditional gaskets, which simplifies installation and probably improves reliability (traditional gaskets have a tendency to trap coolant between the gasket and aluminum cylinder head on the Ford 4.6 liter engine. Over time, trapped coolant can eat away the aluminum). After I installed the Dorman intake, my car ran beautifully.

Couple of weeks later, I decided to change the spark plugs. However, I unpleasantly discovered that the Dorman intake partially obstructed 2 spark plug holes on the passenger side (the rear 2 spark plugs next to the intake passages marked with torque sequences 4 and 8). The obstruction was enough to block out my Craftsman 5/8 spark-plug socket, which means that changing these 2 spark plugs would require removal of the intake manifold again ... an unreasonable expectation. This problem did not exist with stock Ford intake.

If it weren't for this flaw, I would rate this product with 5 stars.

Dorman OE Solutions Intake Manifold 615-178 Review

I bought this for my 96 Lincoln after I found out that my intake manifold cracked and it was past the deadline for the class action settlement from Ford. There are great instructions on the internet for the installation and it took about 7 hours from start to finish. The only problem was that one of the two temperature sensors would not come out of the old manifold and had to be replaced. The most difficult part of the installation was cleaning the mating surfaces.So far everything has worked fine.

Dorman OE Solutions Intake Manifold 615-180 Review

Installed the upper intake manifold kit in a 1998 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight which was experiencing coolant loss. The old upper intake manifold (plenum) had started to melt around the original EGR tube, causing a gasket failure and a slow leak of coolant into the engine. The Dorman kit came with all the parts necessary to completely replace the upper intake manifold, including all the gaskets needed and a new reduced diameter EGR tube designed to stop (or at least delay) the melting that caused the problem in the first place. The kit includes torque specs and minimal installation instructions...look around online for more detailed directions if you're not familiar with how it's done. If you're automobile literate it's not that hard of a job. More in depth than some might be willing to undertake, but if you have the confidence and motivation to see the job through to the end, it's manageable as a DIY afternoon project. Depending on skill level it could take anywhere from 2-6 hours to disassemble and install the new part. A good number of parts have to come out of the engine compartment (or at least be moved out of the way) before you can take the old intake manifold out and install the new one.

The only "specialty" tool you'll probably need to get a hold of for the install will be a torque wrench that can be adjusted for inch pounds (NOT food pounds)...be sure to follow the included torque directions carefully upon install. You run the risk of cracking the plastic or not getting a good seal from the gasket if you improperly torque the bolts or install them in the wrong order.

Amazon's price is by far the best I've been able to find. A trustworthy supplier, and they offer free shipping because the part is over $25. If you install this kit (properly) yourself you will be saving hundreds of dollars. There might be better kits out there that offer premium features, but the car I installed this in isn't worth more than a few thousand dollars anyway. The Dorman kit is adequate for most people's uses, includes all the necessary parts, and the price is hard to beat.
