Perma-Coil 5-40 Thread Repair Kit Review

The Perma-Coil® kit number 1208-015 is 5-40 inch coarse thread and comes with the 5-40 insert tap (not a regular 5-40 tap. The required 5-40 insert tap is larger than a standard 5-40 tap and requires a 9/64" drill bit size hole.).

This kit comes with 12 stainless steel inserts, a 5-40 insert tap and an installation tool for the inserts.

Simply drill a hole using a 9/64" drill bit (not included), then tap the hole with the included tap, you next install the insert onto the insert tool and thread the insert into the hole just about 1/4 to 1/2 turn below the starting threads. Then screw the insert tool back out and if needed break the little tang off of the insert (instructions on back side of packaging).

Dorman OE Solutions Intake Manifold 615-175 Review

Visually, the quality of the Dorman intake's material and workmanship seems to be better than the Ford stock intake on my 2001 Mustang GT. The Dorman intake uses an aluminum crossover as opposed to the unreliable plastic crossover on the Ford stock intake (Ford corrected this problem in 2002). The Dorman intake also uses integrated O-rings instead of traditional gaskets, which simplifies installation and probably improves reliability (traditional gaskets have a tendency to trap coolant between the gasket and aluminum cylinder head on the Ford 4.6 liter engine. Over time, trapped coolant can eat away the aluminum). After I installed the Dorman intake, my car ran beautifully.

Couple of weeks later, I decided to change the spark plugs. However, I unpleasantly discovered that the Dorman intake partially obstructed 2 spark plug holes on the passenger side (the rear 2 spark plugs next to the intake passages marked with torque sequences 4 and 8). The obstruction was enough to block out my Craftsman 5/8 spark-plug socket, which means that changing these 2 spark plugs would require removal of the intake manifold again ... an unreasonable expectation. This problem did not exist with stock Ford intake.

If it weren't for this flaw, I would rate this product with 5 stars.

Haynes Repair Manual for 1997 - 2001 Toyota Camry Review

The manual is OK about what it does cover but it leaves way too much uncovered.If you are going to work on these cars, the Toyota filed service manual is the only good one that I know of.If you by this manual, then do not expect much or you will be disappointed.

For example, consider replacing the fresh air or cabine air filter which is usually located behind the glove box.Turn to the index and search for filter or cabin or fresh or glove and you find NOTHING.The only mention of air filter is the engine intake air filter.

Dorman OE Solutions 955-301 Power Replacement Driver Side Mirror Review

I used the Dorman OE Solutions 955-301 and 955-302 (driver and passenger respectively) parts to replace the broken mirrors on my 1996 GMC Jimmy.Overall, the Dorman OE Solutions parts fit well.Just be sure to save the original nuts since you only get the mirror assembly and the triangular foam piece.

Compared to the OEM mirror:
1. The Dorman parts are the same size as the OEM parts, but the actual mirror/reflective surface is about 15% smaller than the OEM parts so your field of view will diminish.

2. The Dorman mirror is not held inside the assembly as rigid as that of the OEM.This leads to the mirror vibrating at higher speed (60 mph plus).Just poking the mirror with a finger will show that the Dorman has more flex/give whereas the OEM mirror doesn't move.

3. The power motor is not as smooth (jerky) as that of the OEM.Adjusting the mirror will take a tiny weeny more effort.This could be related to #2.

If I had to do it again, I would pay twice the price to avoid the mirror vibration.However, if I don't intend to keep my vehicle, then the Dorman parts are perfectly fine.
