Fram PH4967 Extra Guard Passenger Car Spin-On Oil Filter Review

Since I got my first car, Fram has always been the oil filter brand I would reach for. The PH8A was the standard ford oil filter for years, And I went through plenty of them. My mom has owned a 1992 toyota corrola and a 2001 corrola, and this is the standard 4 cilinder engine filter, even for the camary. I went through many of these when she would drive 80+ miles a day to work.Always reliable and never a leak, very consistent. It was a nice improvement whe they added the grip end to these as well, very hand when you have oil on your hand.

The Fram Extra Guard oil filter is what I typically use on my car at oil change time. They are typically the lowest cost filter that isn't generic. They have always worked well for me so I have no complaints. One nice feature is the top of the filter is coated with a material that allows your oil filter wrench grip it well so it doesn't slide off when trying to tighten or loosen it.

Fram XG4967 Extended Guard Passenger Car Spin-On Oil Filter (Pack of 2) Review

The auto parts stores in town NEVER carry these because they want you to buy more filters. So I always order enough of these from Amazon to get free shipping and I'm all set for both cars for months. They are cheaper here anyway.

I run Mobile 1 synthetic oil and use these to capitalize on the longer intervals between required oil changes. With these extended guard filters and 100% synthetic oils like M1 or the cheapest Amsoil 100% synthetics, I go 7000 miles (I could probably go more, but I'm conservative since oil is the lifeblood of an engine and aside from oil I don't do wonderful maintenance like I should).

The color of the oil IS dark, I agree, but the real measure would be to use a test kit on the oil to see if it is still protecting the engine. Color doesn't neccessarily mean everything. I would like to see 99% efficiency in an extended interval filter, but unfortunately to get that sort of protection you have to install a bypass and use two filters at once (one cheap and one 99% filter like K&N or purolator).

In short, Amazon has made it easy & inexpensive to avoid shopping around for hi- mileage filters of good quality. I'll keep buying these as long as Amazon keeps carrying them. The purolators are a good deal here also.

Fram PH3593A Extra Guard Passenger Car Spin-On Oil Filter (Pack of 2) Review

I bought two of these for my Subaru Forester and both of them burst about two weeks after I installed them. When I took the first one off, I noticed the metal was incredibly thin, almost the thinness of a soda can. If I hadn't stopped and seen the smoke coming out from under my car (oil on manifold), I might have ceased the engine.

Well, I figured maybe I'd nicked the filter when putting it on. So when I put the next one on, I was extra careful not to scratch or nick the can in any way. DIdn't matter. Same result.

Cheap-o filter ... no wonder nobody likes Fram filters.
