Sylvania 9007SU BP SilverStar Ultra High Performance Halogen Headlight - Pack of 2 Review

I recently purchased a 2007 Nissan Frontier SE pick-up.I noticed it had the reflective headlights when I purchased it, but thought no furthur about it until my first night back roads(dark) drive. We have a lot of deer in the area, and hardly a night goes by that I do not have them cross the road in front of me.I could not see more than 100 feet in front of me on dim and about 125 feet on bright, it seemed, and was hesitant to drive more than 30-35 mph. I found myself ducking down to try to see under the light/dark edge.I was amazed to hear my wife describe the same feeling.I hated to drive at night.I contacted the local Nissan dealer and asked if the lights could be adjusted.The service manager acted like I was crazy and said they had not had this problem before, and was no help at all.I contacted Nissan headquarters who were even less help.They told me to contact the local dealers who were independently owned, and would be glad to furnish me a list of the area dealers.What a joke.I asked for help to solve a serious problem to me and got the brush off from Nissan on what I considered a serious design problem.I have a friend who has a Titan and does not have the reflective type lights and has no problems. So, Internet here I come.I found the Sylvania Silverstar Ultra lights, and started reading the reviews.Almost all were raves about how much it helps night driving.So, I decided to purchase some.BEST PURCHASE I HAVE MADE IN SOME TIME!!!! These lights made night driving so much easier.I can now see down the road.I would recommend these lights, and have, to anyone who feels their night vision is impaired by insufficient lighting by their automobile.Thanks Sylvania for fixing my problem.

Sylvania 9003ST BP Twin SilverStar High Performance Halogen Headlight - Pack of 2 Review

After 8 years, one of the original headlight bulbs in our Honda Odyssey burned out.I discovered that Sylvania had these really cool replacement bulbs that were brighter and whiter than the OEM ones.Not wanting a yellow (oem bulb) and a (new) bright white one, I replaced both bulbs with the Sylvania type, the 9003/HB2 "High Performance Lighting".It cost about $[...] for two. Everything was fine for about 7 months until one of them burned out.I thought that was weird, so I bought a new one, installed it, then looked for the warranty statement on the replacement bulb package.There is none.I wrote to the customer service at www.sylvania.com/auto, expecting them to be really embarrassed at the short life.They weren't. Here's the important part of their reply:

"The life of any halogen bulb varies based on vehicle type, vehicle voltage, amount of time the bulb is on, road conditions, proper installation, and correct application. The average life of SilverStar® headlights are approximately one year. If the bulbs do not meet your expectations, we will replace them within a year of purchase when obtained through an authorized US retailer.

With our SYLVANIA SilverStar® products, the primary goal is to offer the brightest, whitest light. Research has shown SilverStar® headlights improve driver visibility and reaction time. However, since our SilverStar® headlights are up to 35% brighter and our SilverStar® ULTRA headlights are up to 50% brighter than standard halogen, they may have a shorter life span compared to our other products.

We offer a wide variety of products to satisfy customer needs including brightness, durability, color options and increased visibility.We recommend evaluating your lighting annually as part of your regular maintenance."They then included instructions for replacing the burned out bulb - a ONE TIME courtesy.That's RIGHT, WHEN it happens again, I'm out of luck as evidenced by this closing:

"If you experience similar performance with the replacement product please contact us again so that we can make an alternate lighting recommendation for your vehicle."

So, to summarize:

1. Silverstar bulbs aren't engineered to last.Much like a meteor, they're designed to be very bright and burn out quickly. But, meteor shows are free and Sylvania Silverstar bulbs cost $[...] a pair.

2.The website lists the performance rating as 200 hours. Yes, for an AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCT.If you use your lights ONE HOUR a DAY, these aren't designed to last even a YEAR.

3. Sylvania gives NO CLUE on the packaging that you're signing up for a once a year replacement schedule at $[...] when you start down this road.

4. Sylvania will grace you with ONE replacement under warranty if it fails before a year is up, but that's it. After the first failure, you're out of luck.

This is a TERRIBLE PRODUCT only because I'm not interested in having headlights burn out while I'm traveling or at other random times at one year intervals. Especially when it's a product that's a little tough to replace (you can't get any finger oils or other oils/dirt on the bulb during installation or it will kill it prematurely - this is standard for any halogen or xenon bulb gas product). OEM products last 7-10 YEARS or more, but even 5 years on this product would be acceptable.1 year or LESS is NOT for this type of product, and Sylvania is scamming people for doing this.

This is a SHAMEFUL product that Sylvania should be embarrassed to offer for sale.NO one should buy it - EVER.I would give it 0 stars if I was allowed to.

Sylvania H3ST BP SilverStar 55-Watt High Performance Halogen Headlight Review

I ordered these after I finally got around to replacing my 1997 Jeep Wrangler's headlights with Silverstars. These were for my foglights and between those and the headlights light brightness and reach were increased 50%. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because my BMW's have xenons and those are better still. I was next to a Lexus with regular lights one morning and mine were definitely brighter. A friend with a 2003 Jeep Wrangler is planning to get some after seeing the difference.

Sylvania 9006SU BP SilverStar Ultra High Performance Halogen Headlight - Pack of 2 Review

ALL the DOT-legal high output bulbs achieve higher output by overdriving the filiments, which reduces bulb life. They have to do this because the DOT puts limits on wattage. The only exception are HID and HIR bulbs, which use new technology to get more light out of less watts.

According to Sylvania:
"Since our SilverStar(r) ULTRA
headlights are up to 50% brighter than standard halogen, they will have
a shorter life span when compared to our other products. Part number
9005SU will last for approximately 125 hours of "on time", 200 hours for
part 9006SU."

Sylvania H1 ST BP 8 TWIN SilverStar 12V 55-Watt High Performance Halogen Headlight Review

The Good:
Looks wise they are somewhere in between regular halogens and HID Xenons. Brightness is maybe 15-20% more than the regular halogens.

The Bad:
While I've better luck with their lengetivity compared some other users, the first set lasted about 11 months (both blew out withing 3 weeks of each other).

The Ugly:
The second set already has one dead and it they are only 9 months old.
Plus, this may be a coincidence but it seems they hate cold weather. Each time they blew out was when temps dipped below 25F.

Spend a bit more and buy PIAA Extreme Whites or Hellas. They have been known to last 5 times as long (relatively speaking)

Sylvania 9006ST BP TWIN SilverStar High Performance Halogen Headlight - Pack of 2 Review

I fell for the hype and it was a mistake. Other reviewers will no doubt agree that these are short-lived bulbs and there is a reason for this. These bulbs are colored blue to *simulate* the HID look. Any color on the glass actually reduces output, so Sylvania uses an over-rated filament to get brighter light to compensate for the light absorbed by the coloring. Because federal laws are very specific about the output of headlights, Sylvania cannot use a filament that draws more current so the filament is burning overly hot and therefore has a shorter life. They same seems true for their uncolored X-Tra Vision bulbs. (Which may be the Silverstars without the color.) I tried those and they both burned out in less than a year, two weeks apart.

I too have switched to GE bulbs and hope their bulbs are more durable.

CONS:

I've purchased the Silverstars before, so I knew what to expect when I got them.For those of you wanting a bright white light without the high cost of a xenon headlight kit, or PIAA bulbs (which are top of the line), then silverstars are for you.A word of caution though - they don't last as long as normal or long-life halogens; but they look real nice on any car.

My original lamps on my Miata lasted 4 years.I replaced them with these Sylvania Superstars last year and both have already burned out.After reading Consumer Reports' review from December 2006, I now see why.They found no noticable driving improvement by using these bulbs and they tend to burn out too quickly.I see gimickry all thru the auto headlight bulb market!

Consumer Reports recommomended the standard halogen bulbs.

Lisle 14540 Headlight Adjusting Ratchet for Ford Review

Get the KAS-5529A Ratcheting Wrench KAS-5529A WRENCH FORD HDLGHT instead.It is about half as thick as the Lisle Wrench.The KAS-5529A wrench looks more like a conventional box end ratchet wrench, and comes with both 4mm and 4.5mm ends to fit other vehicle headlight adjuster bolts.

This "Lisle 14540 Headlight Adjusting Ratchet for Ford" is made moderately well, but it is too thick to fit properly between the headlight and radiator firewall of my 1999 Ford Crown Victoria Interceptor.This wrench's 4mm sleeve is held in place by press fitted washers on either side.It can't be made much thinner.

This Lisle wrench may just fit onto the top adjusting bolt, but if the bolt moves backward to raise the headlight beam, the wrench may not be removed from the bolt.The headlight retaining plate(s) must then be popped loose to allow the headlight assembly to move forward enough to allow the wrench to be removed from the adjusting bolt.

Sylvania H4ST BP SilverStar 60-Watt High Performance Halogen Headlight Review

I though it would be a gimmick or a waste of money when I bought this bulb.The stock bulb on my Suzuki C50 cruiser would not let me go beyond 60MPH at night, as I would out run the headlight (actually on a country road, it was more like 45MPH).
